Managing Crucial AYA Oncology Conversations
A cancer diagnosis in adolescence and young adulthood disrupts vital physical, social, and emotional development, leaving AYAs in need of age-appropriate support. Unmet needs include sexual health, finances, emotional well-being, and more, leading to increased cancer-related morbidity and reduced quality of life. Oncology clinicians can play a crucial role by addressing these concerns, promoting open communication, and providing referrals. Anticipating and addressing challenges is essential for compassionate and effective care, as cancer survivors from this age group may face long-term quality-of-life impairments. Prioritizing AYAs’ developmental needs during treatment can improve future health outcomes.
