A Child With Cancer in Your Class – Information for Teachers

This brochure wants to provide Dutch speaking students, parents and the school with tools to make adapted education as smooth as possible.

Year:2019

One of your students is seriously ill and is being treated for cancer. This can raise a lot of questions when the student comes to school during or after finishing his treatment. Because education for seriously ill children requires an individual approach, this brochure wants to support you in organizing this tailored education. Sick children and adolescents are encouraged to participate as much as possible in ordinary everyday life, such as going to school. It is important to maintain a healthy balance between sufficient stimulation and challenge, but certainly also support when necessary, considering the disease and treatment. This requires great flexibility from all involved.

This brochure contains the following chapters:

  1. Impact on the child and family
  2. To school or not to school?
  3. Education outside of school
  4. Cognitive and physical support
  5. Social-emotional support
  6. Informational websites
  7. Helpful contact information
