Europa Donna’s groundbreaking White Paper on Cancer and Family Planning emerged following a pivotal policy event at the European Parliament in February 2023, featuring essential contributions from their President Tanja Spanic, Youth Cancer Europe’ s Katie Rizvi, and Fedro Peccatori of IEO. Co-hosted by MEP Frances Fitzgerald and Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakides, the event underscored the critical need to illuminate fertility and family planning issues.
In 2022, Youth Cancer Europe conducted a survey among over 600 cancer patients aged 15-39, revealing eye-opening results. This study shed light on the potential compromise to the mental health and overall quality of life for young individuals due to fertility-related distress experienced across the spectrum of cancer care. It was discovered that accessibility to fertility services was comparatively lower for individuals with lower education, socioeconomic status, and those belonging to sexual, gender, racial, or ethnic minority backgrounds.
The White Paper targets the challenges faced by young individuals, especially women with breast cancer in Europe, concerning fertility preservation and family planning options. These challenges include the impact of cancer treatment on fertility, lack of awareness and access to preservation methods, psychological and emotional distress, and the necessity for enhanced support from healthcare professionals and facilities.
Ultimately, the White Paper aspires to enhance the quality of life for those living with or beyond breast cancer by providing them with the information, resources, and support to make informed decisions about their fertility and family planning. It advocates for a comprehensive approach involving European countries, healthcare institutions, and policymakers to address these crucial issues within the context of cancer care.
