Specialized rehab program for young adult cancer survivorsThe study explored the effectiveness of various elements within a complex rehabilitation program tailored for young adult cancer survivors (YACS). Although it’s challenging to isolate the impact of individual program elements, combining the study results with existing theory and research provides insight into key components.

Setting Individual Goals: Rehabilitation should be goal-oriented. Assisting YACS in setting achievable goals, as seen in this study, helps structure their rehabilitation, fosters motivation, and enhances their sense of responsibility.

Physical Exercise: Physical activity plays a crucial role in cancer rehabilitation. YACS are interested in programs focusing on physical activity, which, when tailored effectively, can significantly improve overall health-related quality of life (HRQOL).

Psychoeducation: Tailored psychoeducational programs, such as those addressing exercise and fatigue management, can positively impact psychological dimensions (e.g., coping and emotional functioning) and overall HRQOL.

Individual Follow-Up: Rehabilitation must be individualized, addressing YACS’s multifaceted challenges and needs. Individual appointments with various cancer rehabilitation specialists and personalized goal setting contribute to improved HRQOL.

Peer Support: YACS benefit greatly from peer support. Interacting closely with peers during rehabilitation programs fosters supportive exchanges, empowerment, and improved social functioning.

Next-of-Kin Weekend: While this component had limited impact in this study due to low compliance, its success may be hindered by the unique challenges faced by YACS, including concerns related to privacy and family dynamics.

These findings suggest that a holistic approach, incorporating these elements into complex rehabilitation programs tailored to YACS, can lead to positive outcomes, including enhanced HRQOL and physical capacity. Further research and larger studies are needed to validate these results and guide the development of effective rehabilitation interventions for YACS.
