Psychosocial support for children, young people with cancer and their families

This guide aims to use current research to find the best possible overall support model for young cancer patients and their loved ones and to ensure that the structures of Finnish society support a good recovery from cancer.

There is ample evidence that psychosocial support can make a very significant difference to the lives of young patients and their families. For example, if support is provided systematically and regularly, children and families do significantly better during treatment and recover more quickly. Similarly, a regular assessment of the family’s financial situation, guided by a professional and in partnership with the family, can significantly prevent debt and loss of income. The present guide covers standards of psychosocial support in a detailed and systematic way. The authors believe that the guide will be useful for professionals, researchers, and policy makers, as well as for all others interested in the subject.

The guide discusses the following topics:

  1. Psychosocial assessment
  2. Monitoring and evaluation of neuropsychological effects
  3. Psychosocial follow-up of childhood cancer survivors
  4. Psychosocial services and therapeutic support
  5. Financial burden assessment
  6. Psychosocial care of parents
  7. Preventive counseling and psychoeducation
  8. Preparation and support for interventions
  9. Enabling social interaction for children and young people
  10. Supporting siblings
  11. Supporting school attendance during and after treatment
  12. Assessment of adherence to medication
  13. Palliative care
  14. Providing support after the death of the child
  15. Communication, documentation and training standards
